Leveraging The Full Power Of The Internet… To Quit Smoking

(Ok, so maybe this blog doesn't really represent the full power of the internet (yet...), but a fraction of it will do)

Yesterday, i decided that i'm quitting smoking. Yes, again. I normally keep non-software-development related things off of this blog but in this case i'm going to make an exception. I have tried to quit smoking many times already and while the actual quitting is (IMO) the easy part, it is the not-starting-again-after-a-few-months part that i typically have problems with. So the idea was: let's just post this on my blog to get some extra motivation to stay away from smoking. How am i going to do that? Well it's pretty simple actually. To the first person who actually catches me smoking again: i will buy you 5 books, which you obviously get to pick, from my list. And no, this is not a joke :)

Cold turkey, no nicorette tablets or patches, and start running or spinning (or whatever makes your blood pump around) ;-)

Damn, now I wish I was working near you :-) I’d like to have some of those nice books on my shelf ;-)

Congratulations! I quit a few years ago after 19 years of smoking and many, many, many attempts to quit. It wasn’t easy, but it has been well worth it. Keep pushing. We’re all rooting for ya.

Find some athletic pursuit which will give you a reason to not smoke, that’s my advice.

I was an on and off smoker for years and the only times I ever stopped were when I was doing something athletic – cycle racing, hill walking, climbing. But I properly quit 4 years ago when I took up running and then triathlon. Since quitting smoking, I’ve run 3 marathons and completed Ironman, amongst countless other races, long and short. I run 50 miles a week and swim and cycle.

I can’t even begin to contemplate smoking ever again.

    Good luck.

we’ve pointed the webcams to the kitchen, ever since we noticed the mysterious disappearance of the Hungarian cigarettes about 2 months ago ;)

@davy do i need to buy you a new packet?

    @Teranex,

no thx, they weren’t mine ;)
though i have guarded my cigs at work very safely ever since :P

@davy: here is what happened: On the last day of the year there were still two or three packets, which had been there for three weeks i think. So I was pretty sure they were just ‘community owned’. I even asked to the other people that were in the office that day if they bellonged to somebody and, if i remember correctly, i was told that they were a present from our hungarian friends. So, i thought i could as wel take one to celebrate new years eve. (if there is one night in the year to do stupid things it is that night).
Obviously if i would have known that they belonged to somebody i wouldn’t have taken them. If they belonged to somebody i’ll buy that person a new packet.

    Are the bets still open?

@Teranex: Allright a ‘community owned’ packet of cigarettes…. wouldn’t you rather just take a single cigarette, go outside and smoke it instead of taking the whole package?

The ‘community owned’ cola zero bottles at techdays were there for consumption too… or did you fill a bag of them before going home? :)

You owe the smoking ‘community’ at the office a pack of hungarian cigarettes in my opinion :p
