why does a server need to have Windows Mail (or any mail client for that matter) installed?

Why does a server need a GUI in the first place?

This isn’t installed by default and quite a lot of people use server 2008 as a development platform.
They are quite happy that they have “client” tools available.

Well i don’t know how the server was installed so it might have been selected explicitly

but uhm… using it as a development platform requires some work, no? i think it’s strange that you have to jump through hoops to use it as a development platform (http://www.win2008workstation.com/) but that you can just select a Mail client during the install :)
